VIDEO: Traffic wardens beat biker over parking row in Karachi

KARACHI (Web Desk) – A brief altercation over a parking dispute between Traffic Police personnel and a motorist turned ugly on Monday when the cops thrashed the man near PIDC Office in Karachi.

Shafiq, a resident of Karachi, was apparently stopped by traffic policemen when he tried to park his motorbike in no-parking area.

Samaa’s exclusive footage showed the personnel using a helmet while thrashing the man, dragging him on the road and blowing punches on his face.

The spat instantly turned into an intense fight, followed by gunshots from inside the nearest police station, Civil Lines, prompting a strong protest by civil society.

SSP Traffic police Faisal Chachar told the media that an FIR has been lodged against Shafiq, while a traffic policeman, who tortured the motorist, would be suspended.

The case included provisions of obstructing the state’s affairs, torturing police officials and creating chaos.

“We need to see both sides of the story,” Chachar said, claiming that the man violated the law by parking his vehicle in no-parking zone.

However, he said that the policemen have no right to beat any person and for that matter one of the personnel would be suspended.

Political parties have also jumped in the issue, condemning the manhandling of the citizen and demanded to withdraw FIR against the victim.

Jamat-e-Islami Karachi’s Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ali Zaidi expressed their hope that action would be taken against the traffic policemen.
