ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the alleged mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, is likely to be released from jail after the Islamabad High Court on Friday ruled that his detention was illegal.
According to media reports, the Islamabad High Court has said that he cannot be kept in prison anymore and ordered his release.
Lakhvi, a commander of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, was detained under a new case in December hours after the Islamabad High Court suspended his detention and ordered his conditional release from jail.
Lakhvi has, since 2009, been in a jail in Rawalpindi. The court said that it did not have evidence to prove Lakhvi’s involvement in the worst-ever terror attack in India, in which 166 people were killed in Mumbai in 2008.
Lakhvi has been granted bail in both cases against him, including the 2008 Mumbai attack case and a case pertaining to the kidnapping of an Afghan national.
On February 28, Adiala Jail Superintendent submitted a report to the court of Judicial Magistrate, stating that accused Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi cannot be produced before the court due to security reasons.
