The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has successfully completed the restoration of Lohari Gate, one of the thirteen gates of the old city. This significant project, which began on November 7, 2023, was finished at a cost of approximately PKR 19.08 million.
Lohari Gate gets its name from the Lohar community, renowned for their craftsmanship in iron and steel. A WCLA official stated that the restoration aims to preserve the rich heritage of the ancient city, ensuring it remains a testament to the area’s historical and cultural significance.
The restoration involved extensive renovations. The gate’s surface has been smoothed, its structure reinforced, and the intricate fresco lining repaired to restore it to its original condition. Additionally, the surrounding pavement has been rehabilitated for easier access for visitors. Efforts were made to strengthen the walls and ceilings, and illegal constructions and commercial activities around the gate have been removed to maintain its authenticity. The electrical infrastructure in the area has also been upgraded to improve power supply for nearby homes and the market within the gate.
Before this project, Lohari Gate had deteriorated significantly, compromising its architectural integrity. Kamran Lashari, the Director General of WCLA, emphasized, “Lohari Gate, one of the oldest and most valued landmarks in inner Lahore, represents our commitment to preserving the city’s cultural heritage. This restoration highlights our dedication to safeguarding Lahore’s rich history and underscores the gate’s architectural significance as a vital tourist attraction and a valuable resource for historical studies.”
The successful restoration of Lohari Gate serves as a powerful reminder of Lahore’s vibrant past and its architectural beauty, encouraging both locals and tourists to explore and appreciate the historical treasures the city has to offer.
