Yemen ceasefire begins as Saudi, Houthi forces announce to stand by truce

ADEN (Staff Report) – The ceasefire in Yemen has begun since midnight after the announcement by Saudi-led Arab coalition to pave the way for upcoming UN-sponsored peace talks in Kuwait.

The Saudi-led coalition supporting government forces in Yemen has said it will respect a UN-backed ceasefire coming into force from Monday. Houthi militants have also said they will respect the truce.

The Saudi statement , however, added that forces will reserve their right to respond once the Houthi side and their supporters have breached the agreement.

More than 6,000 people have been killed and two million displaced in more than a year of fighting between the two sides.

The recent development towards the ceasefire is result of Yemeni President Abdrabbou Mansour Hadi’s call to put the conflict on hold ahead of UN brokered talks on April 18 in Kuwait.
