BEIJING – Over 140 people are feared caught under the rubble after a massive landslide hit Sichuan province in south-western China, international media reported.
As per reports, a side of a mountain collapsed at about 6:00 local time in a village named Xinmo, destroying nearly 40 homes, and it is feared that over 140 people have been buried under the rubble.
As the incident was reported, rescue teams reached the spot and are currently busy in searching for survivors beneath the boulders.
The landslide is so big that it blocked a two kilometre (one mile) stretch of river and 1.6km of road.
A couple and a baby have been rescued and shifted to hospital after teams of workers used ropes to move large rocks, BBC reported.
According to state TV, President Xi Jinping has urged the rescuers to “spare no effort” in their search for survivors.
At least 12 people were killed in January when a landslide hit a hotel in central Hubei province.
In October 2016, landslides lashed eastern China in the wake of torrential rains brought by Typhoon Megi, killing at least eight.
