MUMBAI- Popular Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam has opened up about the national anthem debate currently reverberating in India expressing that he would stand up even for Pakistani anthem out of respect.
‘If the national anthem of Pakistan is played and all Pakistanis are standing, I will also stand out of respect for that country and those people,’ the singer said.
The Bollywood maestro expressed that ego should be ignored and national anthem of every country should be respected.
‘If it is played then we should stand up, there should be no ego in that. If I am a good and understanding person I will stand up for the national anthem of any country.’
Commenting on the recent decision by the Indian court that ‘people do not need to stand up at a cinema hall to be perceived as patriotic’, the singer asserted that it should not be played in cinema halls and restaurants as they were not the right place for it.
The ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ singer dubbed the national anthem prestigious and sensitive adding that it should not be played in certain places– in movie theatres or restaurants.

Nigam who hit headlines with his comments about Azaan in April, joined the chorus of Bollywood singers who are expressing their viewpoint regarding the decision of the top court.
Earlier, famous Pakistani-turned-Indian singer Adnan Sami called for respecting the national anthem by standing up from the seats as a sign to show respect.
Although Adnan’s tweet did not refer to any particular states’ anthem, however, a direct connection of his expression can be linked with India as the tweet came days after the Indian Supreme Court’s order.
