Asif Zardari apologized after anti-establishment speech, claims Khawaja Asif

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz leader and former Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif claimed on Monday that Pakistan Peoples Party co-Chairman Asif Zardari kept apologising after his controversial 2015 statement about the establishment.

In an interview to a television channel, the recently disqualified minister said that Zardari had told PML-N that former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf should be tried in court, adding that in reality, he(Zardari) wanted to protect the former president.

Asif continued that Zardari had informed PML-N that he had given assurances to the United States, United Arab Emirates and Britain that a treason case would not be filed against the former president.

The former lawmaker also claimed that PML-N had played a vital role in securing Zardari’s stronghold over the party, of which Bilawal was a witness.

The revelations came a day after Asif Ali Zardari expressed his grievances over the tense relations with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, hurling scathing allegations on the latter.

In a heated speech in 2015, Zardari had warned the establishment not to overstep its mandate but now expressed that the statement was at the behest of Nawaz Sharif.

“Do not disturb us or we will respond to a brick with a brick,” he said, following which he left the country and returned after 18 months.

The former president said that Nawaz Sharif had urged him to fight against the establishment, adding that PML-N did not support his party when he tried to impeach ex-president Pervez Musharraf.

Zardari also alleged that it was Nawaz who ordered National Accountability Bureau to take action against his party workers in Sindh adding that he wished to maintain a social relationship with Nawaz.
