Cardiac ward declared sub-jail after Nawaz shifted to PIMS hospital from Adiala Jail

ISLAMABAD –  Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital’s cardiac ward has been declared sub-jail for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif who was shifted to the medical facility Sunday night after his health deteriorated.

The authorities have issued a notification in this regard, besides closing the ward to other patients and the general public by taking strict security measures.

The security inside and outside the PIMS hospital was tightened and 10 police officers, under the head of the superintendent of police (SP) for prison department, were stationed to stay with Sharif.

Nawaz Sharif was shifted from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi where he, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captian Safdar are serving their terms following their convictions in the Avenfield case by an accountability court.

When the former premier was being shifted to hospital, workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf gathered outside the medical facility and started chanting anti-Nawaz slogans.

As the matter was brought to the notice of in-waiting prime minister Imran Khan, he barred the party workers for raising slogans. Khan also extended prayers for Sharif’s quick and complete recovery.

PIMS officials confirmed that jail authorities asked them to make necessary arrangements to shift Sharif to the facility. Consultants of various departments have been visiting the prison and examining the former premier on a daily basis.

Officials said they had been asking him to move to the hospital, but he had been refusing to do so. A senior official said he is a heart patient and is now suffering from cardiac ischemia.

Doctors recommended moving Sharif to a hospital after his ECG showed irregular heart activity and the tests revealed blood clots. He is also experiencing pain in both arms.

Nawaz Sharif was arrested along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz upon arrival and the Allama Iqbal International Airport from London on July 13 and was shifted to Adiala Jail where he is serving the sentence awarded to him in the Avenfield reference case by the accountability court.
