Pervaiz Khattak threatens resignation for denial of CMship

PESHAWAR – The semblance of unity within the ranks of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf seems to be shaking as Pervaiz Khattak, the former Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has threatened to quit politics if he does not get the top slot of the province again.

According to Khattak himself, he has communicated to the party leadership about his decision to remain in the province.

“Asad Qaiser and I refused to go to the center and decided to stay in the province. I have decided to quit politics and leave the party as well if I was not appointed the chief minister,” Pervez Khattak told The News.

A PTI office-bearer, on the condition of anonymity, has expressed that the party leadership will hold more meetings in the next few days to get additional feedback of the PTI’s newly-elected parliamentarians but Atif Khan seems to be the favorite choice for the next chief executive.

According to insiders hovering around Bani Gala, Pervez Khattak and Asad Qaiser had reportedly told the PTI leadership that if they were called to the center they would not accept Atif Khan as chief minister; this was also confirmed by a newly-elected PTI parliamentarian.

Another reason for keeping Asad Qaiser and Perviaz Khattak in the center is the numbers game as PTI leads the race with some 116 seats, however, as Imran Khan and Ghulam Sarwar had won multiple seats, the majority would reduce to 111 seats and so the resignation of Khattak or Qaiser would cause problems for the party.

On the other hand, Imran Khan, the next Prime Minister is poised to announce the name of Chief Minister KPK in next few days where the party is in majority with 66 seats.
