ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan has directed the candidates, who have won more than one seat in July 25 general elections for national and provincial assemblies, to relinquish the additional seats.
According to Constitution and electoral rules, the candidates can retain only one seats and they have to resign from all others seats they have won.
Such candidates have been asked to send their resignation to the chief election commissioner before taking oath in National and provincial assemblies.
Among other candidates who won more than one seats, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan remained prominent as he emerged victorious across all five seats he contested from: Bannu NA-35, Islamabad NA-53 , Mianwali NA-95, Lahore NA-131 and Karachi NA-243.
As per the rules, Khan, the in-waiting prime minister of Pakistan, would have to relinquish the seats except one.
Meanwhile, President Mamnoon Hussain signed a summary approving the National Assembly session on August 13. The newly-elected members will take oath of their office on the first day of the session, followed by elections for the speaker, deputy speaker, and the leader of the house.
Upcoming Prime Minister, Imran Khan will take oath of his office on August 18 as per Senator Faisal Javed for which President Mamnoon has canceled his Ireland tour.
