TLP chief Khadim Rizvi remanded to police custody for another 20 days

LAHORE – An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Punjab capital city has granted a 20-day physical remand of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi and others.

Civil Lines police officials, after producing Rizvi in court amid tight security, sought a 30-day remand of the firebrand cleric, Pir Afzal Qadri, Pir Ijaz Ashrafi, and Hafiz Farooqul Hassan.

A photogrammetric test of the TLP chief was cited as the reason for seeking physical remand, the Dawn reported. The test is used to determine if the person in question was actually the individual represented in a video or audio clip, according to the deputy prosecutor.

The court, after hearing the arguments, remanded Rizvi and others into police custody for 20 days.

Rizvi was taken into 'protective custody' in November last year after the law enforcement agencies began a countrywide crackdown on the far-right religio-political outfit, which paralysed normal life across the country in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to acquit Aasia Bibi.

According to the figures issued by the government, a total of 2,899 people were taken into protective custody from across Punjab while 139 persons from Sindh and 126 from Islamabad were also taken into custody during the crackdown.
