LAHORE – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Saturday ordered to appoint Dr. Niaz Ahmed Akhtar as permanent vice chancellor of Punjab University, nearly after two years of Dr. Mujahdi Kamran’s exit in 2016.
Higher Education Commission (HEC) secretary presented a report on the appointment of the VC before a bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, at apex court’s Lahore Registry. According to the report, Dr. Niaz topped the list of three shortlisted candidates.
CJP Nisar remarked, “You [Niaz] should perform your duties honestly and make decisions without taking pressure from anyone”.
He observed that a search committee, set up by the government, wasted a year to appoint a permanent VC, adding that the performance of the committee formed by the apex court was satisfactory.
The three shortlisted candidates included University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Taxila Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT) Principal Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar and former provisional vice chancellor as well as Punjab University Faculty of Behavioural & Social Sciences Dean Dr Zakria Zakar.
Earlier, the top court removed Zakria as provisional VC on allotment of varsity land to the provincial government.
