KABUL (Web Desk) – A 40-year old Indian woman residing permanently in Kolkata was abducted in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul, late on Thursday.
According to media reports , the woman, Judith D’Souza, was abducted around 10:40 pm on Thursday was a senior technical advisor at a Non-governmental Organization (NGO) the Aga Khan Development Network.
Although no group has come forward to claim responsibility for the abduction yet, Indian authorities are in correspondence with the Afghan government and are attempting to secure an early release of the woman.
Judith’s family has also been informed of her abduction. Government sources claimed that efforts are in full swing to ensure safe and early release of D’Souza.
“Our Embassy is in touch with senior Afghan authorities and the government is in touch with her family in Kolkata too. All efforts are being made by Afghan authorities to secure her early release,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officials were reported as saying.
Earlier in May, the Indian Embassy had alerted Indian nationals in Afghanistan to be extra cautious. Afghanistan bound commuters were also warned about the volatile security situation of conflict zone.
“All Indians residing in Afghanistan and Indian travelers to Afghanistan are advised that the security situation in Afghanistan remains highly volatile. Terrorist attacks have taken place in many parts of the country against a variety of targets including foreigners and are expected to continue. There is also the risk of kidnapping and hostage taking throughout the Afghanistan,” the statement said.
A New Delhi-based news agency also tweeted about the abduction.
