Russia calls meeting in response to US, UK bombings in Yemen

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry Press Service, Russia harshly denounced the United States and the United Kingdom on Friday for beginning military operations against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Retaliating against Houthi attacks on commercial boats in the Red Sea during the Israel-Hamas war, the US and UK air forces acknowledged their strikes late on Thursday.

The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, expressed worry about the airstrikes on Telegram, calling out Washington and London for their “total disregard for international law” and calling them “another example of the Anglo-Saxons’ perversion of UN Security Council resolutions.”

During a live briefing, Zakharova stressed that the bombings in Yemen constituted a “direct threat to global peace and security” and called on the international community to denounce the US and UK’s conduct.

An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the matter has been formally requested by Russia’s Permanent Mission to the UN and is set for later today.
