LAHORE - Police on Monday registered an FIR against a man, who is accused of hurling a shoe at former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at an event in a seminary in Lahore, and his accomplices.

Later today, the prime accused, identified as Talha Munawar, and others were produced before the court where they were sent on 14-day judicial remand.

Police on Sunday arrested Munawar and two accomplices - Sajid and Abdul Ghafoor - after he threw a shoe at the former prime minister when he reached the rostrum to address the participants at the event in Jamia Naeemia seminary. The accused was thrashed by security personnel before handing over to police.

The shoe-attacker and his accomplice, who are former students of the seminary, then chanted slogan ‘Labbaik Ya Rasoolallah’ before they were nabbed.

The attack on Nawaz Sharif was widely slammed by all mainstream political parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and religious parties.

According to Dawn News, the prime suspect and his two accomplices were booked today under Section 16 (Dissemination of rumours) of the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance and Section 355 (Assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person, otherwise than on grave provocation) of the Pakistan Penal Code, read with Section 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation).

The prime accused was reportedly admitted to Services Hospital after being thrashed by people in the seminary.
