IHC temporarily suspends Election Bill 2017

ISLAMABAD - The Islamabad High Court suspended the Electoral Reforms Bill 2017 on Tuesday while admitting a petition filed against the legislation.

The decision was announced by a single judge bench comprising Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui who issued notices to the respondents and postponed the implementation of the act.

The directives were issued on a petition filed by Maulana Allah Wasaya. The Islamabad High Court judge also summoned report from the investigative committee headed by Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul Haq

The Electoral Reforms Bill 2017 was recently ratified by President Mamnoon Hussain that paved the way for former Premier Nawaz Sharif to lead Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz as president.

Another controversy that emerged after the passing of bill related to the annulment of clauses regarding Khatam e Nabuuwat for legislators against which a petition was filed in the Islamabad High Court.

The Supreme Court was also moved against the bill, however, the top court raised objections on the petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Awami Muslim League Chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed.

Another petition filed by Pakistan Peoples Party is still pending with the apex court.
