Iftikhar Chaudhry seeks details of Nawaz Sharif s assets from ECP

ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has moved the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to obtain details of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s declared assets.

The plea was filed by advocate Sheikh Ahsanuddin on behalf of former chief justice.

The petition states that “in the light of Panama Papers, it is a common suspicion that Nawaz Sharif and his family own some undeclared assets abroad, hence the ECP should disclose details of declared assets of the prime minister”.

Chaudhry’s legal counsel Sheikh Ahsanuddin said that depending on the review of Nawaz Sharif’s declared assets, a separate petition for his disqualification may also be filed.

The move comes just a day after Iftikhar Chaudhry urged the Prime Minister to resign from office till the completion of an investigation into his assets after his family’s ownership of offshore companies was revealed in the Panama Papers.

As per law, every parliamentarian has to declare assets owned by him and his close relatives with Election Commission of Pakistan. Any member of Parliament can be disqualified from office if found in possession of undeclared assets.
