Alia Bhatt beats Sonam Kapoor as best actress at Filmfare Awards, Sonam is disappointed [See FilmFare Winners Here]

The first award of the season went to Alia Bhatt for Best Actress in ‘Udta Punjab’, and Sonam Kapoor went home, disappointed.

Director Ram Madhvani won the best director award for the highly applauded ‘Neerja’, starring Sonam Kapoor as the lead.

Sonam Kapoor was being considered the strongest contender for the best actress this year, for her sterling performance as Neerja Bhanot, but lost the award to Alia Bhatt.

“We were all very happy because the film has been recognised. I was honoured to be selected for the Best Director, though I felt Shakun Batra’s direction of Kapoor & Sons was also worthy of recognition. Jim Sarbh won the Best Debutant award and we breathed a collective sigh of joyous relief when Shabanaji won the Best Supporting Actress award for film,” Neerja’s director Ram stated.

However, Sonam’s brother Harshvardhan Kapoor won the Best Debutant award along with her Neerja co-star Jim Sarbh.

Speaking at the red carpet pre-win Alia Bhatt had said, “I’d be lying if I said I am not looking forward to the awards. I know there are others with an equally strong chance of winning. May the best woman win.”
