Fans have been Legendary singer Mehdi Hasan’s final resting abode left his fans utterly heartbroken as the King of Ghazal’s grave has been in an unbelievably scruffy condition for a long time.
Now, the Salman Sufi Foundation has decided to step in and take the responsibility of renovating and maintaining Shahenshah-e-Ghazal’s gravesite.
Mehdi Hasan was laid to rest in Karachi’s Mohammad Shah graveyard in Nazimabad Town. The founder of the foundation Salman Sufi while talking to a local media outlet said,
“The condition of Hasan sahib’s grave is really bad, It is in shambles. The columns are broken, they have cracks in them. The calligraphy is done with shoddy paintwork; it is just a touch-up job and not even proper calligraphy. The area has litter all around it. No cleaning is being done,”
Revealing the reason they took this project, Sufi added, “The reason why we decided to take up this project is that our artists deserve way more respect than we are currently giving them. Hasan’s music is listened to across Pakistan and the world, so there is no boundary and border.”
While talking about the renovation process, he added that they will fix columns with proper calligraphy, “We will make the gravesite as humble as Hasan sahib himself. At the same time it will reflect that a man of his stature is resting here. “
“This is a very small gesture. It isn’t a big thing. We don’t consider ourselves doing him any favours. We consider it our honour to do this because this should have been done by any of us a long time ago.”
“It is only apt that we, as the people of Pakistan who claimed Hasan sahib as a singer from amongst us, should put and make sure his final resting place mirrors his legacy.”, he concluded.
Unarguably one of the most legendary figures in ghazal singing, Mehdi Hasan is referred to as the “Shahenshah-e-Ghazal”
