Pakistan s ex-FM Shah Mahmood Qureshi arrested in US cipher case

ISLAMABAD – PTI Vice President Shah Mahmood Qureshi was arrested from Islamabad short from his residence in the federal capital.

Reports said he has been arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in a case related to “US cipher” and will be shifted to the agency’s headquarters for interrogation.

PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan confirmed his arrest on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

“Vice Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureishi sahib arrested from his house in Islamabad 25 minutes ago. He had just reached home after doing a Press Conference,” he wrote.

“Condemn this in the strongest words possible. Had hoped that the reign of lawlessness would have ended after the exit of the Fascist PDM Government, but it appears that this Caretaker Governement wants to break the records of their predecessor Fascist Govt,” he added.

A joint investigation team of the FIA is investigating the case related to cipher, which PTI chairman and leaders have been claiming that it contained evidence regarding the US threat to oust Imran Khan from power.

On March 27, 2022, ahead of a vote of no-trust that resulted in Khan’s ouster, the PTI chief had waved a piece of paper in front of the crowd attending a public meeting in Islamabad, claiming it was evidence that an “international conspiracy” being hatched to remove him from the office.

Earlier in the day, Shah Mahmood Qureshi addressed a press conference where he slammed the action against Usman Dar, the PTI’s Sialkot-based leader as his house and factories were sealed in an action.

He also raised concerns over expected delay in elections, saying the party would approach the court if elections were delayed in the country.
