Following the highly publicized and controversial lawsuit by Hollywood actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, the decision caused a bit of frenzy among the fans of both the Pirates of the Caribbean and Aquaman stars. Heard’s fans believed that the decision was biased and she did not get proper representation.
Disgruntled, Amber Heard is now appealing the jury verdict in the multi-million-dollar defamation case she lost to her former husband, Johnny Depp. Lawyers for Heard filed a notice of appeal with the Virginia Court of Appeals.
“We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment,” a spokesperson for Heard said in a reference to the constitutional amendment protecting free speech.
“We are therefore appealing the verdict,” they said in a statement.
“While we realize today’s filing will ignite the Twitter bonfires, there are steps we need to take to ensure both fairness and justice.”
The Virginia jury in June 2022 awarded $10 million in damages to Depp after finding that the particular 2018 newspaper column written by Heard was defamatory.
The Black Mass actor sued Heard over a Washington Post op-ed in which she did not take his name, rather describing herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.”
Heard, who had counter-sued Depp, was awarded $2 million by the jury. The trial took an intense six-week for the jury to reach the final verdict. The case was live-streamed which featured intimate details about the Hollywood celebrities’ private lives.
Heard demanded a new trial earlier this month, which a judge rejected. Heard’s lawyers asked Penney Azcarate, the judge who presided over the trial, to set aside the jury verdict and declare a mistrial, but she denied the request, eventually.
