ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Former President and co-chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari turned down the presidential ordinance on Senate elections in Fata, terming it an attack on democracy, media reported on Sunday.
He said that it stands in rank contradiction with the Constitution to issue an order after the announcement of Senate schedule, adding, “It is tantamount to ‘tapping on the shoulder’ for the undemocratic elements.”
The PPP co-chairman further said that overnight change in the standard operating procedure of senate elections in Fata is absolutely unacceptable, Zardari asserted demanding the government to reverse the presidential order forthwith.
It’s an electoral fraud committed in the guise of election reforms to disenfranchise the tribal people, he said.
Earlier, FATA members also reject presidential order and demanding the immediate withdrawal of the presidential decree, the FATA members called on the government to hold elections in FATA right after the decree is vacated.
They also said Nawaz Sharif-led government made the Senate elections controversial by issuing the ordinance.
Moreover, the Order was also challenged in courts by Fata MNAs in both the Supreme Court and the Islamabad High Court.
