Ig Punjab Summoned As Lhc Seeks Clarity On Events In Punjab After College Rape Incident

LAHORE – Lahore High Court has ordered Punjab Inspector General of Police to address lack of action in Lahore college incident, that sparked violent protests in provincial capital and parts of region.

Chief Justice Aalia Neelum summoned Inspector General (IG) Punjab to appear for a hearing on Friday, accompanied by a report, concerning recent incidents in colleges and varsities. The top judge of Lahore High Court expressed her deep concern about the severe impact these events have had on the life of an affected girl, regardless of whether the incidents actually occurred.

The proceedings were initiated by a petition from citizen Azam Butt, and during session, Chief Justice lamented lack of action of police after videos and images related to the incidents were made public. She pointed out that the Anti-Rape Act prohibits revealing victim’s name, questioning how such sensitive information was permitted to circulate.

The court also summoned both Advocate General of Punjab and the Registrar of Lahore College for Women University to appear in person. Chief Justice Neelam further directed IG to provide a comprehensive report on an incident at a private college and requested details about a recent suicide at Punjab University, emphasizing the need for a handwritten daily log.

The court’s decisions highlight the pressing need for accountability and thorough investigations into these concerning events in educational institutions.
