ISLAMABAD – The Chinese administration has finally stepped in to help solve the crises between Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding terrorism urging formation of a crisis-management mechanism.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi who met Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on saturday headed to Kabul to call on Afghan president Ashraf Ghani and listen to his viewpoint.
During the meeting with Sartaj, Wang said counter-terrorism was an important part of China’s relations with Pakistan and he thanked Pakistan “for its firm support for China’s fight against the violent terrorist group the ‘East Turkistan Islamic Movement’,” China’s Xinhua news agency reported.
After the meeting, that was more of an effort for arbitration between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Yi flew off to Kabul and exchanged views with Afghan head Ashraf Ghani for detente with Pakistan.

According to a statement issued by Chinese foreign ministry, Yi told Ghani that a three-way conference mechanism involving the two countries and China could promote dialogue and cooperation.
“China sincerely wishes for Afghanistan and Pakistan to improve relations, rebuild mutual trust strengthen cooperation, achieve mutual safety and mutually development,” Wang said, according to the statement.
“As Afghanistan and Pakistan’s mutual friend, China encourages them to establish a crisis prevention and management mechanism as soon as possible, to properly deal with any kind of sudden occurrence.” it added.
It is relevant to mention that the volatile relationship between the two countries worsened after a spree of bombings in Afghanistan.
The Afghan intelligence agencies blamed Taliban-allied Haqqani network and Pakistan for the deadly attack in the diplomatic area of Kabul that left over 90 people dead.
Pakistan rubbished the allegations with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa calling upon Afghanistan to look inwards instead of pointing fingers at others.
What bothers China apart from being a close friend of Pakistan is the fact that it is concerned about the multi-billion dollars China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project that would be fruitless if the security situation in the country is uncertain in the backdrop of strained Pak-Afghan ties.
