Ch Nisar to hold press conference on Sunday

ISLAMABAD – Former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar says he will address a press conference on an as yet undisclosed matter on Sunday evening.

Nisar’s Saturday’s announcement comes amid media reports of Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif appealing to other party leaders to desist from attacking state institutions in their speeches and avoid any confrontation with organs of the state.

On Friday, in an apparent reaction to statements made by former information minister Pervaiz Rasheed, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan had said that some people have put the entire blame for their mistakes on the interior ministry and establishment.

“People should tell what help they expected from the interior ministry and should have the moral courage to explain the conspiracies staged against them,” said a statement released by Nisar’s spokesman.

“They should also have the moral courage to not confuse the nation,” added the statement.

In a reference to the Dawn Leaks commission, the former interior minister said that “a five-member committee comprising of members from federal and provincial institutions gave a decision against them.”

Earlier, Pervaiz Rasheed in an interview to a private news channel said that, “decisions were taken against us while the interior minister existed, JITs have been created ‘the interior’ was there,” he said, in an apparent statement against former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar.
Upset with PML-N ‘advisers’ for the disastrous situation the party had faced in the wake of Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification, the former interior minister has more recently voiced his displeasure over the handling of the Panama Papers issue.

Earlier this week, while speaking at a meeting of the central working committee (CWC) of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which was convened to formally endorse the decision to nominate Senator Yaqoob Khan Nasar as the party’s acting president, Chaudhry Nisar criticised the party leadership for convening the CWC to endorse a decision that had already been made in Lahore.

“What is the purpose of this meeting when we have already learned about the nomination of the acting party president through media reports?” a source quoted Chaudhry Nisar as saying during the meeting, which was presided over by party chairman Raja Zafarul Haq.

The meeting, held at Punjab House, was also attended by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

On the matter of the Panama Papers, Nisar believes it should not have gone to the Supreme Court in the first place.

At a news conference days before the announcement of the Panama Papers verdict, the former minister had confirmed, for the first time, reports about an internal rift within the party, saying he had been excluded from the consultative process on Panamagate.

The press conference was held after a party delegation, which also included Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, managed to dissuade him from resigning in protest.

The former interior minister is also of the view that the party should have avoided a confrontation among institutions.
