ISLAMABAD – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has voiced concern over the situation in occupied Kashmir, is arriving India today (Monday) on a 4 days visit.
Guterres has backed Human Rights High Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein’s call for an international investigation into human rights situation in Kashmir saying that it represents the “voice of the UN”.
He also defended at a news conference his own report on children in armed conflict that referred to situations in occupied Kashmir.
In a meeting with UNÂ Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi highlighted the plight of the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to the report of the Human Rights High Commissioner, Foreign Minister Qureshi expressed grave concern at the suffering of Kashmiris at the hands of Indian occupying forces.

During his first trip to the South Asian country as head of the world body, he will meet Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj on October 3.

Addressing the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mehmood Qureshi had discussed the unresolved Kashmir issue. He had pointed out that the issue poses a great threat to peace and stability in the South Asian region.

The Pakistani foreign minister had further said India must stop human rights violations in occupied Kashmir and stop ceasefire violations across the Line of Control.
