SRINAGAR – A Muslim politician associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling BJP was shot dead in Indian-occupied Kashmir ahead of the latest round of polling.
The killing of Ghulam Mohammad Mir by unknown assailants in Anantnag district is the latest in a string of attacks which have marred the elections.
Mir belonged to a local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was murdered at his house in south Kashmir on Saturday night.
No one has claimed responsibility for the murder, but police have termed it a “terror crime” with investigations underway.
Indian premier Narendra Modi condemned Mir’s killing in a Twitter post on Sunday.

Indian elections are currently underway and the exercise would complete on May 19; results are to be released four days later.
