Samsung likely to launch four Galaxy S10 variants

SEOUL – Samsung is expected to unveil the flagship Galaxy S10 smartphones at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019.

According to Android smartphone community XDA-Developers, the South Korean tech giant is going to launch four variants of Galaxy S10 smartphones.

One out of the four handsets will support 5G as entries for four models – ‘beyond 0’, ‘beyond 1’, ‘beyond 2’, and ‘beyond 2 5G’ were discovered in Android Pie firmware files.

The firmware files containing these names, however, do not contain any other specifications.

The ‘beyond’ is the codename for the Galaxy S10 series and the numbers suggest the variant detail like 0 is the smallest sized device, 1 is a mid-sized device, and 2 is the largest variant.

Samsung might decide to launch three versions of its S10 much like how Apple launched three new versions of the iPhone X last week.

The ‘q’ in the name represents a Qualcomm Snapdragon model while those simply without a ‘q’ pertain to the Exynos variants.

Three devices end in ‘lte’ suggests 4G modem while there are a couple of versions of the beyond 2 that end in ‘5G’.

Experts at XDA have summarized their findings as follows:

  • beyond0 – Samsung Galaxy S10, a 5.8-inch display, side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and single rear camera.
  • beyond1 – Samsung Galaxy S10, a 5.8-inch display, and dual rear cameras.
  • beyond2 – Samsung Galaxy S10+, a 6.44-inch display, and triple rear cameras and double front-facing camera.
  • beyond2 5G – Samsung Galaxy S10+, the same as beyond 2, but with 5G support.

XDA reports that the S10 could have either the Snapdragon 8150 or an Exynos 9820 while a 5G model might have a Qualcomm X50 modem or the Samsung Exynos 5100 modem.

Samsung has already started developing software for these devices, as seen in the firmware files but this does not confirm whether all four of the devices will actually get released.

Previously, Samsung’s CEO told Chinese media that the flagship smartphone will come with “very significant” changes but, the executive did not provide any detail on the kind of changes.

On a separate design note, the top official revealed that there will be very “amazing” colours on offer when it comes to the Galaxy S10.
