ISLAMABAD – The ruling Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz has selected Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to be the interim prime minister of the country.
The decision was made by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during an informal consultative meeting of the party.
According to media reports, Abbasi would serve as the chief executive of the country for 45 days. In the meantime, chief minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif would contest elections to make his way into the National Assembly.
After the victory in elections for the lower house of the parliament, Shahbaz Sharif would replace Abbasi to rule the country till next General Elections.
It bears mentioning that Nawaz Sharif, who was serving as the 15th premier of the country, a third-term for himself was disqualified unanimously by a five-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa for failing to disclose his un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from UAE-based Capital FZE in his nominations papers for the 2013 General Election.
Following the apex court verdict, the Election Commission of Pakistan issued a notification disqualifying Nawaz Sharif as a member of the National Assembly.
