DELHI – India is often dubbed as the world’s ‘rape capital’ and its rape culture seems to be becoming more persistent and rampant with each passing day.
According to Hindustan Times, latest annual crime data by the Delhi Police shows that cases of molestation (from 5,328 to 4,005) and robbery (from 7,141 to 4,538) showed the largest dip.
In 2016 alone, Delhi reported a rape every four hours. Compared to last year’s 2,069 rape cases, 2029 were registered this year. Of these, police managed to solve only 1,744 cases.
The total cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) – FIRs registered across Delhi – increased by 8.88% than last year’s 1.81 lakh to 1.97 lakh this year. However, the rapes still go unreported in India.
According to Girls Globe, the NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau) of India records a 112 percent rise in the number of reported rapes between 1990 and 2008 in India. In 2011, 24,206 rape cases were reported. That’s 66 rapes a day.
Ninety percent of the rape cases in India go unreported. Of every 10 women raped in India, nine are afraid to speak up against their perpetrators or do not have access to social media.
According to a Durex global survey, Indians are not sexually satisfied — only 46% of them manage to orgasm. Social scientists have observed increased sexual frustration in Indian society, with growing rate of rapes and sexual abuses.
