India s Rio Olympics woes: Another of the country s athletes fails drug test

NEW DELHI – Olympics-qualifying shot putter, Inderjeet Singh, who was set to represent India in the upcoming Rio Olympics has failed his sample ‘A’ drug test which returned positive for a banned substance, making him the second Indian after the wrestler Narshing Yadav to be caught for doping.

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) of India told the 28 years old reigning Asian champion that the positive result on the drug test was due to the usage of a banned steroid.

The Haryana athlete who bagged a silver medal in 2014 Asian Games, has been told by NADA to get his ‘B’ sample tested within seven days.

If the second sample also tests positive the Shot putter will not only miss the Rio Olympics, beginning August 5, but will also face a four-year ban under the new World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code.

In related news, wrestler Narsingh Yadav’s only hope for representing India in the Rio Olympics hangs on the WADA rule which says the athlete’s suspension will be eliminated if he is able to prove that he was sabotages by someone which will be his most-likely argument in tomorrow’s disciplinary hearing.
