SRINAGAR – Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world over will observe Youm-e-Shuhada-e-Kashmir today (Thursday) with a resolve to get rid of long-standing Indian oppression.
The day, July 13 marks the martyrdom of twenty-two Kashmiris outside the central jail in Srinagar by the troops of Dogra Maharaja while court proceedings against Abdul Qadeer were taking place in 1931. Qadeer had called upon Kashmiris to defy the Dogra rule, resulting in his imprisonment.
According to Kashmir Media Service, a complete strike will be observed across the restive region as part of a call for a week-long protest which has been given by the joint Hurriyet leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.
The main motive of the strike is to strive harder and come back with a renewed promise to achieve the mission of the martyrs till the goal of liberation from Indian bondage is achieved, the Kashmir Media Service reported.
Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider is expected to chair the main function in connection with the Youm-e-Shuhada-e-Kashmir in Muzaffarabad where he will call upon the UN to fulfil its promise regarding the right of self-determination to oppressed Kashmiris.
Internet services are currently suspended in Indian occupied Kashmir. The suspension comes as the Hurriyet leadership reiterated its resolve to continue its online ‘Kashmir Awareness Campaign’ urging people to put up posts highlighting the Kashmir dispute.

Just a day before the Kashmiris are set to expose Indian brutality, Three Kashmiri youths were martyred during a crackdown by forces in the Budgam district of occupied Kashmir.
This year’s Youm-e-Shuahada-Kashmir is a more special one owing to the fact that the Kashmiri people marked the first anniversary of fighter Burhan Muzafar Wani last week.
Burhan Wani, a commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen famous for appearing on social media in military fatigues to attract young people to join the fight against Indian forces, was martyred in southern Kashmir on July 8 last year.
His martyrdom ignited widespread protests across the Kashmir valley with furious locals demanding an end to a spree of hostility and oppression from Indian forces.
