NEW YORK – China has once again blocked a proposal at the United Nations to list Jaish-e-Muhammad’s chief Masood Azhar as a globally designated terrorist, irking its neighbouring country, India.
India, supported by the United States and other countries, has been trying to press the UN to put the name of Azhar on a list of groups with links to al Qaeda, accusing him of carrying out a series of attack in India.
China has repeatedly vetoed the bid to ban Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar saying there were different views on India’s allegations against Azhar regarding attacks.
In response, India’s foreign ministry expressed concerns as saying: “We are deeply disappointed that once again, a single country has blocked international consensus on the designation of an acknowledged terrorist and leader of the UN-designated terrorist organisation, Masood Azhar”.
“India strongly believes that double standards and selective approaches will only undermine the international community’s resolve to combat terrorism,” the ministry added.
It is important to mention that the UN Security Council has already blacklisted Jaish-e-Mohammad, but its chief has not been enlisted due to the opposition of China.
