Indian hospital declares alive newborn dead, govt orders probe

NEW DELHI – An Indian hospital would face legal action on its medical negligence as its staff declared a set of premature twins dead, while one of them was found alive by parents when they were going for his funeral here the other day.

According to Hindustan Times, a woman named Varsha gave birth to the 22-week premature babies at Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh in Delhi and one of them was declared stillborn.

However, the other was pronounced dead by the staff hours after his condition was stated to be “critical” and “unable to survive”.

Later, the hospital staff handed over the bodies of the pair – one girl and one boy – to the aggrieved family in two plastic bags.

Varshas’ father talking to the daily said, “On our way to their last rites, we noticed movement in one of the packets. On opening it, we found that the boy was breathing and took him to hospital”.

Terming it the negligence of the hospital, the family approached the police and registered a case under Section 308 of the IPC against the hospital and its staff.

Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain on Saturday taking up the issue said that stern action will be taken against the hospital on the severe negligence. He added that the license of the hospital might be cancelled if required.

“When we came to know about negligence on the part of the hospital we ordered inquiry into the same. And I want to assure all that if they don’t work properly we will cancel the licence of the hospital,” Jain said.

The Max Hospital in a statement said, “It has been brought to our notice that a 22-week premature newborn, who is said to be on life support at a nursing home, was unfortunately handed over (as dead) … by Max Hospital, Shalimar Bagh.

“This baby was one of the twins delivered on the morning of November 30. The other baby was stillborn.

“We are shaken and concerned at this rare incident. We have initiated a detailed inquiry, pending which the doctors concerned have been asked to proceed on leave immediately.”
