KABUL – Afghanistan’s leg-spinner Rashid Khan has become the youngest captain in the history of international cricket.
After he was elevated to the number one spot in the ODI bowlers ranking on February 20, Rashid also became the youngest player ever to hold the top spot for any form of ICC men’s ranking. He was only 19 years and 152 days when topped the ICC Player Rankings for men, surpassing former Pakistani off-spinner Saqlain record of 21 years and 13 days.

The leg-spinner has so far taken 86 wickets from 37 ODIs and 47 wickets from 29 T20Is.
He will now lead the Afghan team after regular skipper Asghar Stanikzai was diagnosed with appendicitis.
“The doctors have advised that he will be able to return to cricket in approximately 10 days. Current vice-captain Rashid Khan will lead the team in his absence,” Afghan Cricket Board said in a press statement.

Afghanistan take on Scotland on March 4 to launch their campaign for qualification to the 2019 World Cup.
Rashid will be 19 years and 165 days old when the CWCQ begins.
Prior to him, Rajin Saleh who led Bangladesh in the 2004 Champions Trophy at the age of 20 years and 297 days was the youngest skipper in men’s international cricket.
