Eight-month-old Palestinian baby dies from tear gas shot by Israeli forces
GAZA CITY - In a recent wave of brutality, a Palestinian infant died after inhaling tear gas used by Israeli forces against the protesters along the Gaza strip, said health ministry on Tuesday.

The deceased identified as Eight-month-old Leila al-Ghandour was exposed to the gas during the protests in Gaza city against the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.

At least 58 people were killed and over 2,700 injured as Israeli forces targeted unarmed protesters with bullets and tear gas shelling on Monday.

The officials said it was not immediately clear how close to the border fence Ghandour and her family were.

At least five protests sites have been established since demonstrations in the wake of Great March of Return began on March 30.

The Monday’s protests were against the controversial US decision to shift the embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

The killing of 58 people is the largest number of fatalities suffered in one day since the latest round of protests began more than six weeks ago, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced.

Crowds in Gaza swelled to an estimated 30,000 by 2:30 p.m., 90 minutes before the new US embassy was slated to officially open in the Arnona neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Protests intensified on the 70th anniversary of Israel’s founding, with loudspeakers on Gaza mosques urging Palestinians to join a “Great March of Return”. Black smoke from tyres burnt by demonstrators rose into the air at the border.

A 21-year-old and a 29-year-old were among the first killed by Israeli soldiers, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. In the last seven weeks, more than 50 Palestinians have been killed in protests along the Gaza border.

US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December, setting off protests by Palestinians who see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
