UN chief urges Pakistan India to sustain positive momentum, hold constructive dialogue

NEW YORK – United Nations’ Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on India and Pakistan to keep up the “positive momentum” generated by the release of captive Indian fighter pilot by Pakistani authorities, and to hold talks to de-escalate the tensions between them, the radio Pakistan reported.

The Secretary-General’s Deputy Spokesman, Farhan Aziz Haq in a statement said that we welcome the Pakistani authorities step to release the captive Indian pilot.

“We welcome the news of the Pakistani authorities releasing the captive Indian pilot,” Farhan said, referring to the release of Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan, whose warplane was shot down by Pakistani jets on Wednesday.

He said the Secretary-General calls on both parties to sustain this positive momentum and engage in further constructive dialogue.

The decision to release the Indian pilot was announced by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday as a peace gesture towards India was welcomed by leaders around the world.
