HOBART (Web Desk) – Following a worldwide criticism over on-air flirt with a female TV reporter during interview after a Big Bash League game on Monday late night, West Indian cricketer Chris Gayle has now apologised for his action in a statement on Tuesday.
“I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well,” Gayle said to Channel Ten reporter McLaughlin right after his 41 runs off 15 balls innings for Melbourne Renegades.
He went on to flirt, saying he’d like to have a drink after winning the game. “That’s the reason why I am here, just to see your eyes for the first time”, he said, “Don’t blush, baby”.
Gayle’s remarks sparked anger worldwide and as a result Mr Mark Howard, owner of Melbourne Renegades, also said that there was no place for such behaviour.
The head of Big Bash League (BBL) Mr Anthony Everard promised strict action against Gayle as well.
Channel Ten’s head of sports David Barham said that the channel will be seeking an apology while announcing that his organisation wouldn’t be covering Chris Gayle in future. He said that Mel is a working journalist and was harassed while doing her job.
