Golf’s Asian Tour returns to Pakistan after 11 years

KARACHI – The Golf’s Asian Tour will return to Pakistan for the first time in 11 years following the addition of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) Open Championship to the 2018 calendar.

This year’s CNS Open Golf Championship will take place at the Karachi Golf Club from July 24-27 and will feature a prize fund of $300,000 (€243,000).

CNS said in a statement: “This is great news for golf in Pakistan. We are thrilled to welcome the Asian Tour and its talented members to our beautiful country. It has been 11 years since we last staged an Asian Tour event and we are proud to work together with all sponsors to make this tournament a huge success.

“There was a huge representation of Asian golfers in the last Olympic Games and we hope to provide a viable platform for our golfers to improve on their world ranking. It is also our goal to promote golf among the younger generation in hopes that we will have a Pakistani golfer playing and contending regularly on the Asian Tour in the future.”

The event has formed part of the local circuit since 1995 and is the longest running professional golf tournament in Pakistan. As a recognised Asian Tour event, it will now receive official World Golf Ranking points and allow local golfers the chance to play alongside leading Tour players.

The Asian Tour last held an event in Pakistan in 2006 and 2007. The Asian Development Tour sanctioned a tournament in the country for the first time last year.

The Karachi Golf Club is Pakistan’s oldest golf course.
