ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – The Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz has said that for over three decades, Pakistan has shown exemplary goodwill and generosity in hosting millions of Afghan refugees, however this arrangement was not workable any more.
In a meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, who called on him in Islamabad, he said that given immense socio-economic, development and environmental challenges, the continued presence of Afghan refugees in Pakistan was no longer viable.
He added that the security dimension necessitated more effective border management between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
On the occasion, the High Commissioner also commended Pakistan’s historic contribution and hospitality in hosting the Afghan refugees for 37 years.
