ISLAMABAD -The former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been summoned on July 9 by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in relation to a petition seeking the removal of his name from the political party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The notice has been sent to Nawaz’s Jati Umra residence in Lahore, however, at present, the ousted prime minister is in London with his family to tend to his ailing wife.

The petition has been filed by Awami Tehreek’s Niaz Inquilabi, who has stated that Nawaz was disqualified from Parliament by the Supreme Court and thus a political party cannot be named after a disqualified person.
The ECP has been pleaded in the petition to take appropriate action in this regard in light of the Supreme Court’s July 28 judgment in the Panama Papers case.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan had disqualified the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for not disclosing his employment with FZE Capital, in a landmark decision in the Panamagate case.

Additionally, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar had ruled that ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif could not run Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as the party president.
“An individual disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 cannot serve as party head,” said a three-judge Supreme Court (SC) bench on February 21 headed by the CJP in a verdict on the petitions challenging the controversial Elections Act 2017.
