KURNOOL (Web Desk) – A new university in Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has been named accidentally after a Pakistani scholar.
Last year in November, state Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu formally marked the beginning of construction of a new Urdu university on a sprawling 125 acres in the Kurnool district.
The new university, which is about to start classes from this June, was to be named after Dr Abdul Haq, a famous educationist who founded the highly-reputed Osmania College in Kurnool. Dr Haq is credited with establishing several educational institutions in the region that has since been carved into Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
However, in what appears to be a clerical error, the Andhra Pradesh assembly yesterday cleared a proposal naming the university after Moulvi Abdul Haq, a prominent Urdu scholar who moved to Pakistan during partition, the NDTV reported.
When the proposal was raised in the assembly, neither lawmakers nor bureaucrats realised the gaffe and voted in its favour.
An amendment will now have to be passed to rename the University. An inquiry has been ordered to determine who is at fault.
