KARACHI – A consumer dispute over faulty refrigerator of famous Pakistani company Dawlance escalated into major legal action over the company’s failure to comply with court orders.
A report shared by Urdu Point said Consumer Protection Court in Karachi issued a verdict in favor of citizen Ali Raza, who purchased a refrigerator on 3 December 2021 from a local dealer with a claimed 12-year warranty. However, the appliance reportedly stopped functioning in a shockingly short span of time, on 8 January 2024, barely over two years after purchase.
The issue was then raised as the company’s representative allegedly dismissed 12-year warranty claim, insisting that the product only carried a one-year warranty, and demanded Rs 9,900 for repairs, which started a legal tussle between the two.
Consumer Protection Court, after reviewing all attached documents and evidences, issued verdict, ordering the private company Dawlance to provide a brand-new refrigerator to affected customer. In addition, the court imposed a total fine of Rs 40,000 on the company.
The company allegedly refused to comply with court orders, and situation escalated further, leading the court to issue bailable arrest warrants against the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Umar Ahsan Khan. The warrants, valued at Rs 10,000, were directed to the SHO of Civil Lines Police Station, with strict instructions to ensure implementation by 7 May.
Consumer disputes are becoming increasingly common in Pakistan, as buyers have long reported issues with faulty appliances, only to face resistance from companies when trying to claim warranty support.
