ISLAMABAD – Solar users who completed net metering process have been left waiting for their connections finally gets relief as pending cases are set to be reviewed and their status updated under NEPRA’s new directions.
National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) directed Power Information Technology Company (PITC) to conduct review of pending connection cases to identify consumers who completed the required paperwork and formalities months ago but are still waiting for their solar systems to receive net metering connections.
PITC will review pending applications across the country’s distribution companies (DISCOs) and K-Electric. The company has also been tasked with updating the records and determining the current status of individual applications.
A key part of the review is the inspection of cases that were pending before February 9, 2026. NEPRA wants PITC to identify applicants who have fulfilled the relevant requirements and establish the precise status of their applications. For consumers who have already completed the required documentation and other formalities, the move could provide some relief.
The directive comes amid growing uncertainty in Pakistan’s rapidly expanding solar market, particularly following NEPRA’s introduction of new prosumer regulations. The new regulatory framework triggered questions among solar consumers and industry stakeholders about the future of conventional net metering and the treatment of grid-connected solar users.
On the other hand, NEPRA’s records continue to show approvals and concurrences involving prosumer connections. The regulatory activity shows that applications linked to solar and other grid-connected power users continue to move through the approval system.
Consumers facing lengthy delays are not without recourse. NEPRA also provides a complaint mechanism through which consumers and installers can raise concerns over delayed net metering connections of up to 25 kilowatts.
For applicants who have already installed solar systems and completed the required net metering process, the latest development makes it particularly important to check application records and confirm their current status.
NEPRA directive does not amount to an immediate connection order for every pending applicant. Instead, PITC must first verify the outstanding cases, update the records and determine which consumers are eligible under the applicable rules. Further action will then be taken by the relevant authorities based on the outcome of that review.
For thousands of solar consumers caught in months of uncertainty, the review could prove to be a crucial step toward clearing the backlog. But the immediate question remains whether verification will translate into faster connections for those who have already completed every required formality.
