Pakistan delivered memorable performance at 2026 Hockey World Cup, fighting back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Japan 4-3 and end a 16-year wait for a World Cup victory.
The match began with Japan taking control as Hyota Yamada and Kaito Tanaka scored in the opening quarter to put Pakistan 2-0 behind.
Instead of giving up, Pakistan responded with determination. Rana Waheed Ashraf pulled one back in the second quarter, giving the Green Shirts renewed hope before half-time. Pakistan came out with even greater energy after the break. Rana Waheed Ashraf scored his second goal just two minutes into the third quarter to level the match at 2-2.
The comeback continued moments later when Muhammad Hammaduddin found the net to put Pakistan ahead 3-2. Japan quickly equalised through Koji Yamasaki, setting up a thrilling finish at 3-3.
Pakistan then produced the winning moment in the 40th minute as Hannan Shahid scored to restore the Green Shirts’ lead at 4-3. Japan pushed hard for another equaliser during the closing stages but Pakistan’s defence remained composed and held on until the final whistle.
The victory is a major boost for Pakistan hockey and brings an end to a long World Cup drought. Pakistan’s previous World Cup victory came in 2010 when they defeated Spain 2-1. The national team missed the 2014 World Cup and returned to the competition in 2018 but could not secure a win. Their appearance at the 2026 tournament therefore marked a significant return after an eight-year absence.
Pakistan endured challenging main round this time around, losing to England and their traditional rivals while drawing 3-3 with Wales. With one point, they moved into the classification stage for positions 9th to 16th. But the Green Shirts responded in spectacular fashion against Japan.
A 0-2 deficit became a 4-3 victory as Pakistan showed resilience, fighting spirit and attacking quality to give fans a night to celebrate and end their long wait for a World Cup win.
