A shocking classroom controversy erupted after a teacher was reportedly fired for allegedly making students kiss in class or risk failing. The bizarre allegation sparked outrage and raised serious questions about boundaries and student safety in classroom.
Denver high school French teacher reportedly faced action after students said she pressured girls to kiss each other during graded classroom skits, and some who refused paid for it with zeros.
Jennifer Honka, 50, taught French language and culture at Northeast Early College, a Denver Public Schools high school in Montbello. DPS Board of Education voted 7-0 to sack her for incompetence and neglect of duty. The decision followed student complaints, a district investigation, and a scathing independent review by Colorado Administrative Law Judge Keith J. Kirchubel.
Students described biweekly graded skits with titles like ‘The Boring Kiss’ and ‘The Neighbors Saw Everything.’ Roles involving kissing almost always went to girls, even in classes split roughly evenly between boys and girls. One student said she kissed a classmate despite feeling deeply uncomfortable. Another refused and received a zero. A third reported being told to kiss three other girls. A classroom rule that “the answer is always ‘yes’” left many feeling they had no real choice.
Honka denied forcing anyone. She claimed students could pretend to kiss, blow a kiss, or use a fist bump. At least one student confirmed pretend kissing was allowed. No staff member directly witnessed the kisses. Judge Kirchubel was unmoved. He ruled that the scripts forced teens “to express their preferences and consent about a very personal and sexualized activity on the spot in front of their peers” under a teacher’s authority — with little educational value and clear harm.
The problems went further. Honka repeatedly shared intimate personal details with students, her lesbian identity, childhood abuse, how her son was conceived using a sperm donor and suicidal thoughts that included an urge to drive in front of a semi-truck. One student who had previously struggled with suicidal ideation walked out. Staff also described Honka publicly berating colleagues in front of students.
Despite years of strong evaluations and roughly 24 years in the classroom, the board showed no hesitation. The principal reported the matter to Denver police. No criminal charges were filed.
While still on paid leave from DPS, Honka’s name appeared on staff list at Malley Drive Elementary School in the neighboring Adams 12 district as an English language development teacher. After May 20 firing became public, Adams 12 non-renewed her contract effective May 22, 2026. District officials said she is no longer employed there and is ineligible for future work after learning of her employment history. Her profile vanished from the school website.

In late July 2026, US Dept. of Education opened federal investigation into Denver Public Schools. Officials are examining whether the district violated parental rights under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment and Title IX. Department statements have described the allegations in blunt terms, including claims of compelling sexualized conduct by minors in class. DPS has said it received the notice and stands by its investigation and termination.
The case drawn national attention. Students who came forward described lasting discomfort. One student’s attendance plummeted after the kissing incident. A meme with Honka’s photo and the caption “she makes girls kiss” circulated among teens.
Officials stressed student safety as board’s unanimous vote and the subsequent non-renewal by Adams 12 closed one chapter. The federal probe continues.
