ISLAMABAD – The central working committee of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz on Monday amended the party constitution, paving the way for a disqualified legislator to lead the party.
The amendment was made unanimously at a meeting chaired by the party’s interim president Senator Sardar Yaqub Nasir at Punjab House after it was moved by Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, who is also the general-secretary of the party.
Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was also present at the meeting.
The PML-N members also passed a resolution forwarded by Climate Change Minister Senator Mushahidullah Khan to laud the services rendered by Nawaz Sharif.
The party leaders expressed confidence and reaffirmed their trust in the party leader.
Meanwhile, the PML-N has also summoned a meeting of its general council on Tuesday to appoint Nawaz as the party’s president as he lost his position after being disqualified as law-maker after the Panama Papers’ case verdict
Former senator and the party’s chief election commissioner, Chaudhry Jafar Iqbal, will apprise the members of the schedule for the election of party president.
Later today, the National Assembly will take up the Electoral Reforms Bill 2017 to make it a part of constitution.
The bill was recently amended and passed in the Senate to allow a disqualified person to be made a political party leader.
After sailing through the National Assembly, President Mamnoon Hussain would put his signature, thus allowing Nawaz Sharif to head the party again.
