LAHORE – The crescent of new Islamic month Shawwal has been sighted in Pakistan, meaning that Muslims in the country will mark the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr on Wednesday (July 6).
Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee chairman Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman made a formal announcement to this effect during a press conference in Lahore.
He said that evidence for the sighting of the Shawwal moon had been received and verified on religious as well as legal grounds.
On the occasion, he also condemned the three suicide blasts that struck three cities in Saudi Arabia on Monday, terming them the worst form of terrorism.
Earlier on the same day, a session of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was held in Lahore to sight the crescent moon to mark the beginning of Shawwal. Chairman Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman led the meeting.
The meetings of all other Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committees were also held at their respective offices. The committees recorded evidence for the Shawwal moon from across the country.
Gulf countries, and Muslims in Europe and the United States will also celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Wednesday.
