ISLAMABAD – Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, declared on Monday that victimisation was underway instead of accountability after making her first-ever appearance before the accountability court.
In a brief interaction with the newsmen outside the Judicial Complex, the former first daughter expressed that despite reservations, they showed up before the court as it was a good gesture for public representatives to present themselves for accountability.
“A trial was being conducted and such trials would continue until the day of judgment,” said Maryam Nawaz.
She maintained that the cases against Sharif family were of political nature adding that a representative of 200 million people was ousted from office.
“I am aware of my offence and the cases against me have been registered due to my affiliation with Nawaz Sharif,” said Maryam Nawaz.
She claimed that a pre-planned verdict to oust Nawaz Sharif was announced after they [Sharifs] surrendered their legal rights.
“We are not going to be discouraged by these arrests, this will soon end,” she vowed.
Regarding the non-bailable arrest warrants issued against his brothers Hassan and Hussain, she expressed that Pakistani laws were not applicable to them as they were non-residents of the country.
In a veiled criticism to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, Maryam Nawaz lamented that ‘other absconders were staging rallies’ but they were not investigated.
Maryam Nawaz also heaped scorn on those who mocked and violated the constitution and expressed that no one holds them accountable without naming former President Pervez Musharraf.
It is relevant to mention that flanked by her husband Captain (r) Safdar, Maryam arrived in Pakistan late Sunday and appeared before the accountability court in the references filed by the National Accountability Bureau regarding the posh London apartments on Monday.
Maryam and her husband also submitted surety bonds worth Rs 5 million each after which they were granted bail by the accountability court judge Muhammad Bashir.
The co-defenders Nawaz Sharif, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz skipped the hearing apparently due to the illness of former first lady Kulsoom Nawaz who is undergoing treatment for lymphoma at a hospital in London.
