ISLAMABAD – Former Minister of State for Finance Omar Ayub Khan on Saturday joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Omar Ayub Khan, who is a grandson of the former dictator and president of Pakistan General Ayub Khan, met PTI chief Imran Khan in Islamabad and expressed confidence in PTI’s leadership.
Omar Ayub Khan served as the Minister of State for Finance from 2004 to 2007. He joined the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in 2012.
In 2013, he was elected as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from constituency NA-19 as a candidate of PML (N) in the by-election after 2013 general elections.
Later, he was unseated after constituency election was invalidated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) due to rigging.
Ayub Khan served as the second President of Pakistan from 1958 until being forced to resign amid the 1969 uprising in East Pakistan.
He is noted for being the first and only self-appointed Field Marshal as well as the first martial law ruler who forcibly assumed the presidency following the exile of President Iskander Mirza when the latter imposed a martial law against the Feroz Khan Noon government in 1958.
